Knight Action - Single Girl

Knight Action, "Single Girl" (YSI link)

I've got Chicago on my mind, so let's put up a stone-cold classic from the city that is windy. Knight Action's "Single Girl" is considered by some to be the first Chicago house track; I'm not gonna pretend I know the answer to that, but I can say that it is a definitive track for anyone looking to follow the history of dance music. This one sits at the juncture of disco & italo and full-fledged Chicago house, making it a pretty interesting track historically.

But, let's be honest, that shit's only interesting to nerds. You wanna know if it's any good, right? It is. In particular, this one is for the ladies. I know that we play a lot of shit that's about blow jobs and asses and titties, so hopefully this will prove that we are more than open to ladies doing their thing too. The lyrics are sooo great, I'm sure than you could figure out what it's about from the title. "I'm glad I'm single, I'm glad that I'm free/Now I can be the woman I always wanted to be" sings Sedenia. I feel like there's a great essay out there on feminism and dance music, esp. with the whole disco period. The track was produced by Duane Thamm Jr. and Mike Macharello in 1984, it was huge at the legendary Music Box by the biggest names of the time like Ron Hardy. This is not a jackin' track, it's actually a pretty mid-tempo song, a nice, relaxed flow that fits perfectly with the vocals (sung in this great, "sexy" voice). It's definitely a great tune for anyone looking to get into this type of music, as I don't think it's that far off the 80s sound in pop music with its vocals, synths and drum machines.

Before you go, make sure to cop the reissue of this single, which features an amazing B -side, "D'rail." This is well-worth the money. But, if you need more incentive, the original "Single Girl" 12" goes for $250+ on ebay, so cop it as I'm sure that you'll be able to make some money off of it at some point.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time. I honestly am surprised that there hasnt been a remake of it yet.
