Three 6 Mafia - Oscar Winners

Surreal. That's the only word that comes to mind, having watched Memphis' finest, Three 6 Mafia accept an Oscar award last night for their original song "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp," featured in Hustle and Flow. They were on the same stage as Jack Nicholson, George Clooney and Robert Altman. You know what? They were the only exciting part of the entire night, from their performance with the bizarro interpretative dancing to their running out on stage when their names were called (which coincided with me jumping up and down in bed) to their amazing acceptance speech which featured a shout-out to George Clooney.

Above are a couple of favorites from the CD inspired by the movie, or whatever the hell they call these sorta soundtracks. It's a good CD, a nice tribute to the music of the South. My main complaint is that there wasn't enough of a focus on the music of Memphis, where the film was set. Mike Jones? Juvenile? E-40? I love'em all, but it would have been nice to see more Three 6, more Al Kapone, some up and comers like Yo Gotti, yamean?

Ahh, whatever. Today is not a day for complaining; no, it's a day for rejoicing that Three 6 Mafia won a fucking Oscar, and thus have gained some of the respect and attention they have deserved for years now and gave the Oscars one moment of excitement. I've gotta agree with Tom Breihan, as this is one of the great rags to riches stories and should leave everyone with a smile on their face today.

Oh, and this is the picture MC took at Club Speeed on 34th and 5th during the Three 6 Mafia show in Manhattan. While all y'all bloggers were out writing about this shit from your rooms, we were there at a club you ain't never been to and ain't never goin' to, standing a few feet from legends. MC almost got caught in the middle of a girlfight. Shout to MF for alerting me to this show, being a helpful guide to NYC and just generally down.
